The Winner’s Circle National Advisory Committee (NAC) convened in 2006 to review the program nutrition criteria, key national nutrition recommendations, trends in dietary intake, and current options available in the food industry. The result of the 2006 NAC Annual Meeting was modification of the Winner’s Circle nutrition criteria. (See the NEW Winner’s Circle nutrition criteria.)
The Winner’s Circle National Advisory Committee uses the following rationale to develop and modify the nutrition criteria:
1. Winner’s Circle guides consumers toward food and beverages choices that support healthy eating and chronic disease prevention:
- By promoting fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, calcium-rich foods & beverages, and water
- By limiting fat, saturated fat, sodium, sugar, and calories based upon current recommendations from The Dietary Guidelines for Americans and national scientific organizations such as American Heart Association, FDA, and USDA
2. To identify and promote healthier food and beverage options from those that are currently available in restaurants, schools, other dining out venues, and the packaged food & beverage industry
3. Review of average intake by Americans
